Godfather’s Taco Pie vs Traditional Mexican Pizza

Apr 6, 2026 | Our Signatures, Pizza, Pizza Reviews

godfather pizza taco pie original crust san antonio

Taco Pie isn’t Mexican pizza — it’s a different animal entirely. Mexican pizza uses a tostada base. Taco Pie uses real pizza crust, fresh-baked with taco sauce, seasoned beef, and cold lettuce and tomatoes added right after it comes out of the oven. If you’ve been thinking these are the same thing, let’s fix that.

We hear this comparison a lot. Someone from out of town asks, “Is your Taco Pie like a Mexican pizza?” Short answer: no. Longer answer: keep reading, because once you understand what’s actually in our legendary Taco Pie, you’ll see exactly why it stands in its own lane.

What Is a Traditional Mexican Pizza?

The classic Mexican pizza you’re probably thinking of — most famously from Taco Bell — uses two fried flour tortillas as the base instead of pizza dough. The typical build goes: seasoned beef and refried beans between the tortillas, then pizza sauce, three-cheese blend, tomatoes, and green onions on top. It’s crunchy, flat, and small. More of a stacked tostada than a pizza.

It’s a solid fast food item. But it’s not pizza. The crust doesn’t rise. There’s no oven bake on a real pizza pan. The whole thing fits in your palm. And refried beans are doing a lot of the structural work — which is either great or weird depending on who you ask.

What Is Godfather’s Taco Pie?

Our Taco Pie starts with real pizza crust — Original or Golden, your call. Taco sauce goes down first, then a full layer of seasoned beef, diced onions, and a cheddar-mozzarella blend baked right in. After it comes out of the oven, we add cold, fresh shredded lettuce and diced tomatoes on top. That contrast — hot crust and beef, cold crisp lettuce — is the whole move.

You can get it Mini through Large. Pricing runs $13.99 for a Mini up to $34.50 for a Large. No refried beans. No tortilla layers. Just pizza done Tex-Mex style.

If you want to level it up, check out the Super Taco — same concept but with black olives, sour cream, and a taco seasoning packet on each slice. We covered that in our Super Taco review if you want the full breakdown.

Which One Wins in San Antonio?

If you want a quick snack, Mexican pizza is fine. If you’re feeding a table — or just yourself and you want something real — Taco Pie wins. There’s no contest on size, customization, or that hot-crust-meets-cold-lettuce texture that makes it so good.

San Antonio gets this. We’re a city that loves Tex-Mex and we love pizza. Taco Pie is both at once without apologizing for either. It’s been one of our top sellers since we brought it back, and we’re right here on 151 if you want to try it for yourself.

You can also make Taco Pie at home if you’re feeling adventurous — but fair warning, it’s hard to replicate our taco sauce. And if you’re still figuring out what crust to order it on, our full breakdown of crust options covers every style we make.

Planning a Cinco de Mayo party? We’ve got a whole post on Cinco de Mayo ideas that gets into why Taco Pie is the obvious move for the occasion. And if you just want to see everything we’ve got, the full menu has every specialty pizza and price.

FAQ

Does Godfather’s Taco Pie have refried beans?

No. Our Taco Pie uses seasoned beef, taco sauce, and a cheddar-mozzarella blend — no refried beans. That’s one of the main differences from a traditional Mexican pizza. If you want beans, add them on a Create Your Own.

What crust should I get on the Taco Pie?

Both Original and Golden crust work great. Original gives you that thick, chewy base that holds up well under the fresh toppings. Golden crust is buttery and pan-style — a little richer. Most people default to Original, but the Golden version is worth trying at least once.

Can I get Taco Pie on thin crust?

Thin crust is available in Medium and Large only. You can get your Taco Pie on thin if you want that lighter, crispier base — it’s a different experience but still works well with the taco toppings.

Is Taco Pie spicy?

Not really — it has taco seasoning flavor but it’s not hot. If you want heat, ask about jalapeño add-ons or look at the Hot Stuff pizza, which has jalapeños baked in. The Taco Pie itself is family-friendly spice-wise.

How does it compare to the Super Taco?

The Super Taco is the upgraded version — it adds black olives, sour cream, and a taco seasoning packet per slice. Same base concept, more toppings, slightly higher price ($15.99–$37.75). If you want the classic version, go Taco Pie. If you want everything, go Super Taco.
