Godfather’s Taco Pizza — What Makes It Different

Apr 20, 2026 | Our Signatures, Pizza

Godfather’s Taco Pie isn’t just a pizza with taco toppings thrown on top. It’s built from the ground up as a taco — taco sauce base, a cheddar-mozzarella blend, fresh lettuce and tomatoes added after the oven — and it’s been a San Antonio signature since we first opened.

It Starts With the Sauce

Every other pizza on our menu uses our Signature Sauce — the classic tomato-based, herb-forward sauce that holds down the Original Crust beautifully. The Taco Pie doesn’t use any of that. It starts with taco sauce: a seasoned, tangy base that pulls double duty as a binder and a flavor driver.

That swap changes everything. When you bite into it, your brain registers taco before it registers pizza. That’s by design. The sauce is the first thing that hits, and it cues your palate for everything that follows.

The Cheese Is Different Too

A standard Godfather’s pizza uses mozzarella — clean, stretchy, familiar. The Taco Pie uses a blend of cheddar and mozzarella, which adds a sharpness you don’t get on our other pies. Cheddar is a harder cheese. It melts differently. It colors differently in the oven. The result is a slightly tangier, richer cheese pull that matches the taco sauce underneath it.

This is where the Taco Pie starts to diverge clearly from other pizza attempts at the taco concept — it’s not a novelty. The cheese choice is intentional and integral to the flavor profile. Our full Taco Pie guide covers the complete history of how this pie became a San Antonio staple.

The Fresh Toppings Go On After the Oven

This is the construction detail that surprises people most. Lettuce and tomatoes can’t survive a pizza oven — they’d wilt and turn to mush. So we bake the Taco Pie with the sauce, beef, onions, and cheese, then pull it fresh from the oven and top it with cold, crisp shredded lettuce and diced tomatoes.

You get two temperatures on one slice. The crust and the cheese are hot. The lettuce is cool and crunchy. The tomatoes are fresh and acidic. It’s the same principle as a taco shell — hot shell, cool fillings — translated into pizza format. If you’ve ever wondered why the Taco Pie feels so different to eat compared to any other pizza, that contrast is a big part of it.

Taco Pie vs. Super Taco — What’s the Difference?

We offer two versions of the taco pizza concept, and they’re not the same.

The Taco Pie ($13.99–$34.50) keeps it classic: taco sauce, ground beef, lettuce, onions, tomatoes, cheddar and mozzarella, with extra cheddar melted in. Clean, recognizable, exactly what it sounds like.

The Super Taco ($15.99–$37.75) takes it further. It adds black olives and sour cream — one sour cream packet per slice. If the Taco Pie is a street taco, the Super Taco is a fully loaded taco bowl. You can read the full comparison in our Super Taco review.

Our recommendation: if you’re ordering for someone trying the taco pizza concept for the first time, start with the Taco Pie. If you already know you love it and want more going on, go Super Taco.

How the Crust Affects the Experience

You have four crust options at Godfather’s — Original, Golden, Thin, and Mozza-Loaded. The Taco Pie works on all of them, but here’s what to know:

  • Original Crust — The go-to. Slightly chewy, holds up to the fresh toppings without getting soggy under the lettuce.
  • Golden Crust — Thicker, buttery, rich. If you want the most filling version of the Taco Pie, this is it.
  • Thin Crust — Crisps up nicely and keeps the focus on the toppings. Good if you want a lighter experience.
  • Mozza-Loaded — Adds cheese in the crust itself, which works as an interesting counterpoint to the cheddar blend on top.

Most regulars go Original or Golden. The taco sauce and fresh toppings benefit from a crust that can carry some weight.

Why It Holds Up Against Any Comparison

A lot of pizza chains have tried the taco pizza concept. Most put taco-seasoned toppings on a standard pizza with standard tomato sauce and call it done. The result tastes like pizza with taco seasoning — not an actual crossover.

Godfather’s Taco Pie is different because the commitment is total. The sauce is taco sauce. The cheese blend is cheddar-forward. The fresh toppings are added post-bake. Every component is adapted, not just the protein. That’s why the Taco Pie holds up against any comparison — it was engineered to be a taco pizza, not a pizza with tacos on it.

When Godfather’s came back to San Antonio in 2025 after 35 years, customers came back specifically for this pizza. That’s what decades of loyal fans look like.

How to Order It

The Taco Pie and Super Taco both come in Mini, Small, Medium, or Large. A large runs $34.50 for the Taco Pie and $37.75 for the Super Taco. Both work as a standalone meal for one or as part of a larger spread.

Pair it with one of our sides — potato wedges work particularly well since the crunch plays off the fresh toppings on the pie. Order online at godfathers.orderexperience.net or call us at (210) 750-2222. We’re at 8530 SH 151 Access Rd, San Antonio, TX 78245 — open Sun–Thu 11am–9pm, Fri–Sat 11am–10pm.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Taco Pie spicy?

The Taco Pie is mild — the taco sauce has flavor but not much heat. If you want spice, the Hot Stuff pizza is our go-to for jalapeños, or you can add jalapeño peppers as an extra topping on the Taco Pie.

Does the Taco Pie come with sour cream?

The regular Taco Pie doesn’t include sour cream — that’s the Super Taco, which comes with one sour cream packet per slice. You can add sour cream packets ($0.99 each) to a regular Taco Pie order if you want them.

Can I get it without the lettuce and tomatoes?

Yes. Just note it when you order and we’ll skip the fresh toppings. You’ll still get taco sauce, beef, onions, and the cheddar-mozzarella blend — the rest of what makes it taste like the Taco Pie.

How do I reheat Taco Pie leftovers?

Remove the lettuce and tomatoes before reheating — fresh toppings don’t survive the microwave or oven. Reheat the pizza itself, then add fresh toppings back if you have them, or skip them for a simpler leftover experience.
