What Pepperoni Actually Costs You: 5 Pizza Chains Compared

by The Pizza Guy | Jul 1, 2026 | Healthy Pizza Guides

Pizza fresh from the oven
Pizza Nutrition · 5 National Chains · Cheese vs Pepperoni

Pepperoni barely adds calories. It adds salt.

Swap a cheese slice for pepperoni at five major chains and the calorie count hardly moves, but the sodium climbs every time. The topping you taste is doing less to your calories than the salt you don’t.

The Quick Version

Going from a cheese slice to a pepperoni slice adds just 0–40 calories at five major chains, but 50–160 mg of sodium. In daily-limit terms the salt hit is two to four times the calorie hit. Pepperoni is a sodium decision far more than a calorie one.

  • Sodium always climbs. Every chain’s pepperoni slice adds 50–160 mg over its cheese slice.
  • Calories barely budge. The jump ranges from 0 (Domino’s) to 40 (Godfather’s) calories a slice.
  • Domino’s adds no calories at all: it reduces the cheese when you add a topping, so pepperoni’s cost is pure salt and fat.
  • Pizza Hut’s pepperoni is the saltiest jump: +160 mg, about 7% of a day’s sodium for one topping.
  • The takeaway: if you’re counting calories, pepperoni is nearly free. If you’re watching sodium, it isn’t.

Reading the numbers

A salt tax,
not a calorie one

Pepperoni feels like the indulgent choice, the one you’d skip to save calories. But across these five chains, choosing pepperoni over cheese adds at most 40 calories a slice, and at Domino’s it adds none. If calories are the only number you track, the pepperoni-versus-cheese decision barely registers.

Sodium is where it shows up. Every chain’s pepperoni slice carries 50 to 160 mg more than its cheese counterpart, because pepperoni is cured meat, it’s salt-preserved by design. Measured against the daily references the FDA uses, that sodium bump is two to four times larger than the calorie bump. The topping barely touches your energy budget and takes a real bite out of your sodium one.

Why Domino’s adds zero calories

Domino’s is the clearest case. Its published guidance notes that when you add a topping, the cheese portion is reduced so the pizza bakes properly, so a pepperoni slice lands at essentially the same calories as cheese. What pepperoni contributes there isn’t calories at all; it’s sodium and a little fat, traded in for some of the cheese. It’s a neat illustration of the whole point: the number on the calorie tracker is the wrong one to watch when you’re adding cured meat to a slice.

How this was built

Methodology & sources

Reference product
One slice of a large cheese pizza vs one slice of pepperoni, on the same crust, from the same source, for each chain, so the difference reflects the topping, not a change in data source. Little Caesars uses USDA round-crust records; Godfather’s uses its Golden-crust nutrition guide; the others use chain-label figures.
The delta
“+ cal” and “+ sodium” are the pepperoni slice minus the cheese slice at the same chain. Because slice sizes and cut counts differ between chains, the deltas are compared within each chain, not the absolute totals across them.
Daily references
Sodium compared to the FDA’s 2,300 mg reference, calories to a 2,000-calorie reference. No values are estimated.
Known limits
Values reflect standard menu recipes and vary by location, crust, and reformulation. Collected July 2026.
