Thin Crust vs Thick Crust at Godfather’s — The San Antonio Verdict

Apr 6, 2026 | Our Signatures, Pizza

Thin crust vs thick crust is less of a food debate and more of a personality test. Light and crispy vs hearty and filling. Neither is wrong — but they’re right for different moments. Here’s the honest breakdown of what we offer and when to order each.

We run three distinct crust styles at Godfather’s: Thin, Original, and Golden. Thin crust is on one end of the spectrum, and both Original and Golden are on the thick end — but they’re different from each other in meaningful ways. Before you order, it’s worth knowing what you’re actually choosing between.

Our thin crust guide covers the light and crispy side in detail. If you want the thicker styles, the thick crust guide breaks that down. This post is the side-by-side comparison.

Thin Crust at Godfather’s — What You’re Getting

Our Thin Crust is available in Medium and Large only — you can’t get it on a Mini or Small. It’s light and crispy, with a satisfying snap when you fold a slice. The base stays out of the way and lets the toppings lead. If you’re loading up a pizza with a lot of flavors — or if you just want something that doesn’t fill you up on crust alone — thin is the call.

One thing to keep in mind: because thin crust has less structural mass, topping-heavy pies like the All-Meat Combo can make the base a little soft in the center. Give it a minute before you grab a slice, especially on a Large. For cleaner slices, medium-topping pies like the Humble Pie or Hawaiian work especially well on thin.

Original Crust — The Classic Thick

Original crust is available in all four sizes: Mini, Small, Medium, and Large. It’s thick and chewy with a solid rise — the kind of crust that could stand on its own if it had to. This is what most people picture when they think Godfather’s. It’s the workhorse of our crust lineup and it handles every topping combination we offer without getting overwhelmed.

If you’ve been ordering Godfather’s for years, you’ve probably been getting Original crust without even thinking about it. It’s the default for good reason. Check out Original vs Golden if you’re deciding between the two thick styles.

Golden Crust — The Other Thick Option

Golden crust is pan-style and buttery. It’s thick like Original but with a richer, slightly crispy bottom that comes from being baked in a pan with oil. Think of it as the difference between a hand-tossed and a deep dish — same thickness range, different texture. If you want something indulgent and filling, Golden crust is it.

Golden crust is also available in all four sizes. It pairs especially well with meat-heavy pizzas — the richness of the crust complements the protein load without competing. All five of our crusts are covered in our crust options guide if you want the complete picture.

Quick Crust Reference
Thin Crust: Medium and Large only — light, crispy
Original Crust: All sizes — thick, chewy, classic
Golden Crust: All sizes — buttery, pan-style, hearty

When to Pick Thin

Go thin when you want the toppings to be the star. Thin crust works best on pizzas with moderate topping loads — anything in the three-to-five topping range where the crust won’t get buried. It’s also the right call if you’re ordering for lighter eaters or want to order two different pies without everyone hitting a food wall by slice two.

Lunch orders, quick weeknight dinners, or any time you want pizza that doesn’t weigh you down — thin crust is your answer.

When to Pick Thick

Pick Original or Golden when you’re feeding people who came hungry. Thick crust is filling, satisfying, and holds up under heavy topping loads like the All-Meat Combo or the Super Combo. If you’re ordering for a crowd, thick crust also slices better and travels better — it doesn’t flop when you pick it up.

If you want to see how crust choice affects what to order, our top 5 pizzas post notes which crust each of our best sellers pairs with. And of course, the full menu shows every pizza with its available sizes and prices.

Pairings That Work Well

Thin crust + Hawaiian: the lighter base lets the ham and pineapple brightness come through without richness overload. Thin crust + Veggie: same logic — crispy base, fresh vegetable toppings, balanced result.

Original crust + Taco Pie: the chew of the crust holds up well under the fresh lettuce and tomatoes added on top. Golden crust + All-Meat Combo: the butteriness of the pan-style crust and the heavy meat load are built for each other.

FAQ

Can I get thin crust on any pizza?

Yes — thin crust is available on any of our specialty or Create Your Own pizzas, but only in Medium and Large sizes. If you want a Mini or Small, you’ll need to go Original or Golden crust.

Is Golden crust the same as deep dish?

Not quite — it’s pan-style, which gives it a buttery, slightly crispy bottom, but it’s not as deep or as thick as a traditional Chicago deep dish. Think of it as the richest version of our standard thick crust. Filling and indulgent, but not a two-inch slab of dough.

Which crust is best for leftovers?

Original and Golden both reheat well. Thin crust can get a little limp overnight — if you’re planning on leftovers, go thicker. A quick reheat in a dry skillet on medium heat for two minutes brings thick crust back to life better than a microwave.

Does thin crust cost less?

No — crust style doesn’t affect the price. All specialty pizzas run the same price regardless of crust choice. The size is what determines the price, not the crust you pick.
